Early Detection of Breast Cancer: Your Strength Lies in Awareness — As Part of Pink October Activities

As part of Pink October, the global month dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, Bayt al-Hikma – the Women’s Affairs Department, in cooperation with the Iraqi Breast Cancer Association, organized an awareness lecture entitled “Early Detection of Breast Cancer: Your Strength Lies in Awareness” on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at Dr. Mahmoud Ali Al-Daoud Hall in Bayt al-Hikma.

The session was chaired by Ms. Yasmin Abdul-Razzaq Beijan, Head of the Women’s Affairs Department at Bayt al-Hikma, and delivered by Dr. Siham Imran Mousa, President of the Iraqi Breast Cancer Association and Member of the Iraqi Cancer Council at the Ministry of Health.

The lecture aimed to enhance public health awareness and encourage early detection of breast cancer as an effective preventive measure. Studies show that recovery rates increase significantly—reaching over 90%—when the disease is detected in its early stages. The event also sought to promote a culture of health awareness among women in state institutions.

Dr. Mousa presented valuable scientific and medical information about the disease, emphasizing the importance of early detection and the need for annual clinical examinations. She also highlighted the necessity of psychological and social support for patients from both government institutions and civil society organizations, underscoring that awareness and prevention form the first line of defense against breast cancer.

At the conclusion of the event, Dr. Qahtan Ne’ma Hassan Al-Khafaji, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Bayt al-Hikma, honored the guest speaker, expressing his appreciation for her efforts in promoting cultural and social engagement. He affirmed that women play a vital role in the intellectual and humanitarian mission of Bayt al-Hikma, praising the Women’s Affairs Department for its initiatives in organizing awareness lectures that reflect the institution’s commitment to societal issues—particularly those related to women’s health and empowerment.
